PORTRAIT

John is a young up-and-coming chef, born to an Angolan mother and a Congolese father, who started cooking at the age of 9, inspired by his mother who was running a small food shop at an African market in Angola. John tried many career paths – including fitness coaching and law studies – before discovering that cooking was his passion. He excelled in the kitchen and obtained the recognition he was looking for. After a few tenures at restaurants in the winelands, John is now working at a highly renowned restaurant in town where the head chef has taken him under his wing. John wants to make his marks on the culinary scene of South Africa, and has an ambition to live and work in Italy or Spain for a period of time to gain professional experience. While he is eager to learn abroad, he does not forget his roots; he is very inspired by African produce, and is putting together a menu that draws inspiration from the continent and his life experience.
